San Diego Zoo
In 2022, Nevaeh and I went with a friend to San Diego for a few days. When we found out we were going, Nevaeh immediately told me (please note: she didn’t ask, TOLD) we were going to the San Diego Zoo.
After all, it is one of the top ten zoos in America, according to USA Today. Here’s more:
Why is the San Diego Zoo Famous?
The zoo has over 3,700 rare and endangered animals, representing around 660 species and subspecies. Some of the ones we really liked were the Red Pandas, Capybaras, Takins, and Malayan Tapirs.
I’ll be honest, though; we know that zoos have animals. It’s the above and beyond that made me enjoy it more. Things like:
- Flamingo Characters. Y’all, I pray the girl who worked there when we went still works there or at least trained someone to do her job as joyfully as she did. We laughed the whole time as she followed Nevaeh around in costume.
- Skyfari Aerial Tram. Rising above the zoo: you have views of animals and people down below, as well as the city and Balboa Park, where the zoo is located. We all enjoyed this, especially since it allowed us to rest our tired feet.
- Carnivorous Plant Greenhouse. The biodiversity of the plant areas was a big appeal of the zoo for all three of us. We stopped at the greenhouse, which can be found between map locators 18 and 19, across from the lions.
How much does it cost to get into the San Diego Zoo?
As of August 1, 2024, it costs $74 per adult (12+) and $64 per kid (3-11 years old). Children 0-3 and adults over 65 get in free.
If you are an active military member, you get in for free. Children also get in free during October.
Want to save money while you’re there? They allow you to bring backpacks with food in them, so carrying a meal is not a problem. We went right after our late lunch and ate something small at our hotel.
How Much Time Should I Allow for the San Diego Zoo?
Roughly four to six hours.
They are typically open from 9 AM- 6 PM; however, summer Night Zoo and winter Jungle Bells events keep the zoo open later in the evening.
Wrapping It Up
Nevaeh was right- going to the zoo was worth the trip. If you want more things to do in the area, don’t miss Balboa Park.
