Hot Springs, Arkansas: Nature, Magic, and Main Street Charm

Hot Springs, Arkansas, should be at the top of your list if you’re looking for a getaway that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and plenty of charm. Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains, this town is famous for its thermal waters and historic bathhouses, but there’s so much more to explore. Hot Springs is a destination that will leave you refreshed and entertained. Here’s how to make the most of your weekend in this enjoyable town.

Where to Stay

If you are into camping, I recommend starting your weekend in Hot Springs by setting up camp at Hot Springs KOA. This campground offers all the amenities you could need, from spacious RV sites to cozy cabins if you prefer something more comfortable. The park is beautifully maintained, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the location is perfect—just a short drive from all the action in downtown Hot Springs.

Or check out the historic Arlington Hotel. While the rooms may seem outdated, that’s part of the building’s charm, and the pool area is breathtakingly stunning.

Activities and Excursions

Kick off your visit with a visit to Garvin Woodland Gardens. This botanical paradise is a must-see, with 210 acres of lush landscapes, serene waterfalls, and vibrant seasonal flowers.

After exploring the gardens, be sure to continue on to see the stunning Anthony Chapel. Its soaring glass and wood design makes it a breathtaking sight and the perfect spot for reflection. I seriously never appreciated architecture until I saw this chapel.

Head to Central Avenue (the Main Street of Hot Springs) to soak in the historic charm. This area is brimming with unique shops, art galleries, antique stores, and some wineries and breweries.

Stop by Bathhouse Row to marvel at the historic bathhouses, and if you’re in the mood for a little pampering, book a traditional bath at the Buckstaff Bathhouse for a true Hot Springs experience.

Don’t miss the Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center and Museum. The free self-guided tour is a truly immersive and educational experience as you learn about the history of the bathhouses and their purposes and see much of the original bathhouse that has been preserved.

As you stroll down the street, pop into The Gangster Museum of America to learn about Hot Springs’ notorious past, or check out some local art at the Ozark Bathhouse.

Central Avenue has many spots to see, so leave plenty of time to visit all the various shops, find the perfect souvenir, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the charming town.

Make sure to get off the beaten path (literally, the path runs parallel to Central Avenue) to see the above-ground hot spring on the Arlington Lawn at the corner of Central Avenue and Fountain Street.

Visitor’s Tip: I know this doesn’t need to be said, but be careful because the hot springs are HOT! I was surprised at how hot they are!

As the sun sets, prepare for an evening of entertainment at the Maxwell Blade Theatre of Magic. Maxwell Blade’s comedy magic show perfectly blends humor, illusion, and a bit of Hot Springs history. It’s a family-friendly performance that will leave you both amazed and laughing out loud. This is a Hot Springs staple, so book your tickets in advance.

Places to Eat

For a refreshing afternoon break, stop by Superior Bathhouse Craft Brewery. This unique spot, transformed from a historic bathhouse, offers a great selection of craft beers brewed on-site. Grab a cold beer and a snack while soaking in the ambiance of this one-of-a-kind brewery.

When hunger strikes, head to the Copper Penny Pub for dinner. This local favorite serves delicious comfort food in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic burger, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, or something with a Southern flair, the Copper Penny Pub has something to satisfy your cravings.

Conclusion

As your time in Hot Springs ends, don’t forget to do as the locals do and bottle up some Hot Springs water to take home. You’ll find several free public fountains around town where you can fill your containers with this naturally heated, mineral-rich water. Not only is it safe to drink, but it’s also a unique way to bring a little piece of Hot Springs home with you.

Whether it’s the memories of your adventures or the taste of the town’s namesake, Hot Springs is a place you’ll carry with you long after you’ve left.
