Hollywood Studios: 21 Amazing Things That Should Be on Your To Do List

December 2020 marked our first-ever Disney World trip as a family; we’ve been hooked ever since! Over the past four years, we’ve returned to a Disney park four times—it’s just too much fun to stay away!

While each Disney park has its magic, Hollywood Studios has quickly become one of our favorites, and we’ve been lucky enough to visit it twice.

In this post, I’ll share our must-do experiences and can’t-miss attractions to help you make the most of your next trip to Hollywood Studios. Whether it’s thrilling rides, tasty treats, or a bit of Disney nostalgia, this guide will cover everything worth your time at the park!

A Map and Explanation of Hollywood Studios

Originally opened on May 1, 1989, Disney-MGM Studios was designed to bring the magic of film and television to life for visitors. In 2008, Disney’s Hollywood Studios was renamed, but the park’s essence has remained—offering guests a taste of Hollywood, with a special focus on the Golden Age of cinema.

As you walk into Hollywood Studios, you’re greeted by Hollywood Boulevard, a street lined with stylish shops that transport you to 1930s Los Angeles. The park unfolds into six themed areas: Hollywood Boulevard, Echo Lake, Grand Avenue, Animation Courtyard, Toy Story Land, and Sunset Boulevard. Each area immerses visitors in a unique experience, whether you’re exploring the vibrant world of Toy Story or feeling the chills of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

The park’s overall theme celebrates the glitz, glamour, and excitement of Hollywood. Spanning 135 acres, it blends an idealized version of California’s entertainment industry with the magical worlds of Disney’s films, television shows, music, and theater.

People love Hollywood Studios because it brings beloved Disney stories and classic films to life in unforgettable ways. It’s a place where the imaginary becomes real, and the attractions, rides, and shows make you feel like you’re stepping into the scenes of your favorite movies.

What rides should you rope drop in Hollywood Studios?

So, what exactly is rope dropping? Essentially, it means being at the park before it officially opens. You’ll be among the first guests allowed into the park, giving you a head start on those popular attractions before the crowds roll in.

If you’re staying at a Disney resort, you have a bonus: you can get into the park a little earlier than regular guests, thanks to Early Theme Park Entry. This extra time is perfect for knocking out a couple of big rides before the day begins!

I have two recommendations for rope dropping. If you are in a group, I recommend Millennium Falcon: Rise of the Resistance because it’s an experience ride that takes a while- which inadvertently means it takes a bit longer in the line.

Do you plan to do the single route? Then, I would head to Slinky Dog Dash, as it fills up quickly and doesn’t have a single rider line.

Hollywood Boulevard

As the grand entrance to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Hollywood Boulevard immediately immerses you in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Lined with towering palm trees, this bustling thoroughfare transports you to the iconic streets of 1930s Los Angeles, where movie stars and dreams were made.

From the moment you walk through the entrance gate, a replica of the historic Pan-Pacific Auditorium, you’re greeted by the sights and sounds of classic Hollywood. At the heart of the entrance area is the Crossroads of the World, a recreation of the tower near the original Hollywood entrance, welcoming you into this land of dreams.

At the far end of the boulevard, the majestic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre replica stands tall, home to the thrilling Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. This full-scale replica is a nod to the original Hollywood landmark, where movie magic truly comes to life.

As you stroll along Hollywood Boulevard, you’ll notice the authentic building facades and billboards that capture the essence of Hollywood’s heyday. These themed structures and signs add to the immersive atmosphere and tell the town’s story that became synonymous with cinema.

You can stop by shops like Celebrity 5 & 10, Keystone Clothiers, and Mickey’s of Hollywood to pick up Disney merchandise or movie-related souvenirs. If you’re in the mood for something to eat, this area is also home to the legendary Hollywood Brown Derby, a fine-dining restaurant inspired by the original Brown Derby in Los Angeles, or grab a coffee at The Trolley Car Café, Disney’s very own Starbucks (which we’ll get into more later).

Hollywood Boulevard is alive throughout the day with entertainment, from street performances to seasonal parades like the Pixar Block Party Bash. By night, the street transforms into the backdrop for stunning nighttime spectaculars like Wonderful World of Animation, where the magic of Disney’s animated classics lights up the sky.

Animation Courtyard: Disney Junior

Animation Courtyard is home to Disney Junior—the perfect spot for younger guests to meet their favorite characters and experience the magic of Disney storytelling firsthand. This vibrant area offers a mix of interactive shows and character meet-and-greets featuring beloved stars like Fancy Nancy, Vampirina, Doc McStuffins, and more. It’s designed to captivate little ones with its colorful, kid-friendly atmosphere, making it a must-visit for families with young Disney fans.

Even though our girls were in their teens when we first visited Hollywood Studios, we couldn’t resist stopping by the Animation Courtyard for a few minutes of fun. It was a sweet moment of nostalgia, especially since they were big fans of Fancy Nancy and Doc McStuffins during their elementary school years.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is a delightful, trackless ride that takes guests on a fast-paced adventure through a world inspired by the animated Mickey Mouse shorts.

Located inside the iconic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre replica at Hollywood Studios, the ride combines cutting-edge technology with classic Disney charm. Using a mix of video projections, Audio-Animatronics, and cartoon drawings, the ride brings ten vibrant cartoon scenes to life, immersing guests in a whimsical world where anything can happen. With no track to follow, each ride feels spontaneous and fun, making it a hit with all ages. And for those of you who get motion sickness- we had no problems with this ride!

Commissary Lane

Mickey and Minnie’s Red Carpet Dreams

Mickey and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams is a magical character greeting experience that lets guests meet Mickey and Minnie as they enter Hollywood fame’s spotlight.

The setting pays homage to the Golden Age of cinema, with Minnie dressed in full glam, welcoming guests on her latest musical blockbuster set. At the same time, Mickey greets you as the iconic Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Fantasia. This experience brings the charm of old Hollywood to life, with plenty of photo opportunities and a chance to get autographs from these beloved stars.

While this attraction is perfect for little ones who dream of meeting Mickey and Minnie, something about the classic Hollywood setup makes this experience feel special, and I’d love to try it at least once, maybe with my grandbabies (in 10 years or so). It looks like a charming way to create lasting memories with two of Disney’s most iconic characters.

Joffrey’s Kiosk

When exploring Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Joffrey’s Coffee is the go-to spot for that much-needed caffeine boost. Scattered throughout the park, these kiosks serve delicious specialty drinks that are perfect for keeping your energy up during a busy day of attractions and shows.

From refreshing iced coffees to rich, warm lattes, Joffrey’s has something for every coffee lover. Plus, it’s not just about coffee—tea lovers will also find plenty to enjoy.

On my first trip, I visited their kiosk near Toy Story Mania and couldn’t resist trying the Round ‘Em Up Latte. I had no regrets!

This indulgent drink features cookie butter syrup and dulce de leche sauce, topped off with whipped cream, animal crackers, and sprinkles—a playful and delicious pick-me-up!

Grand Avenue

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

If your family loves the Star Wars franchise as much as mine, then Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is where you’ll likely spend most of your time at Hollywood Studios.

This immersive land transports you to the planet Batuu, where the lines between fiction and reality blur, allowing you to live out your own Star Wars story. From the moment you step into Black Spire Outpost, a village built on ancient ruins, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled to a distant galaxy. The attention to detail is astonishing—there are no obvious ride markers, making it feel like a real, bustling spaceport where anything can happen.

Here, you can shop for rare artifacts, taste galactic foods, and interact with droids and other characters. Whether you’re flying the Millennium Falcon on Smuggler’s Run or battling the First Order on Rise of the Resistance, there’s no shortage of thrilling adventures. You can even build your lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, an experience that’s part show, part hands-on crafting!

Ronto Roasters

One of the must-try food spots in Galaxy’s Edge is Ronto Roasters, where you can grab a quick bite while still immersed in Batuu.

The signature item here is the Ronto Wrap, a delicious combination of roasted pork, grilled pork sausage, peppercorn sauce, and tangy slaw, all wrapped in soft pita bread. It’s a hearty and flavorful meal that packs a punch, perfect for refueling after exploring the outpost.

We also couldn’t resist trying the Kyryll Pork Rinds. These pork rinds are seasoned with a savory blend of ancho chile, cheddar, smoke, and cinnamon—an unexpected but amazing mix of flavors. They were a hit with our family, and I can confidently say they’re worth adding to your order if you’re a fan of savory snacks with a little kick.

To top it all off, we enjoyed a refreshing Tatooine Sunset, a blend of Gold Peak® Unsweetened Tea and Minute Maid® Premium Lemonade with melon and blueberry. It was the perfect drink to complement our meal and cool us down during our galactic adventure.

Docking Bay 7

During our second visit to Galaxy’s Edge, we stopped at Docking Bay 7, a great spot for families or anyone needing a more filling meal. This quick-service restaurant offers a variety of hearty and flavorful dishes, making it ideal for those who are really hungry after a day of exploring. The industrial spaceport setting adds to the immersive experience, with cargo crates and spaceship-themed decor making you feel like you’re dining on a distant planet.

Docking Bay 7 is also a fantastic choice for families with younger kids, as it has more menu options catering to different tastes and preferences. Whether you’re in the mood for something like the classic Fried Endorian Tip-Yip or one of their plant-based dishes, there’s something for everyone here. This spot hits the mark if you’re traveling with picky eaters or need a satisfying meal.

Milk Stand

The Milk Stand at Galaxy’s Edge offers two iconic drinks: Blue Milk and Green Milk, both plant-based blends with fruity or tropical flavors. The Blue Milk combines coconut and rice milk with dragon fruit, pineapple, lime, and watermelon for a refreshing, easy-to-drink treat, while Green Milk has a more citrusy, tropical mix of mandarin orange, passion fruit, grapefruit, and orange blossom. You can even get an alcoholic version of Blue Milk at Hollywood Studios, which adds Bacardi Rum to the mix for a grown-up twist.

As for our experience? Nevaeh said it’s great for a hot day and unique, but if you could make a blue drink at home, that would be even better. Her face in the video pretty much sums it up! She said that she might have it occasionally if she could visit regularly but wouldn’t make it a go-to drink. Bre’s advice: don’t drink it too fast, or you’ll be hit with an icy brain freeze. As for me? I say skip the whole thing and just grab a coffee instead!

Shopping

Galaxy’s Edge is one of the two places I highly recommend when shopping at Hollywood Studios.

The shops here are not your typical theme park souvenir stands—instead, they feel like an extension of the immersive world of Batuu. You’ll find yourself wandering through Black Spire Outpost, discovering hidden gems like Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, where you can shop for rare and unique Star Wars relics and Creature Stall, filled with exotic creatures straight from the galaxy.

Beyond the unique selection, the shopping experience feels like part of the adventure, with no bright signs or prominent branding to pull you out of the story. You can also visit Savi’s Workshop to build your custom lightsaber or head to Droid Depot to create your astromech droid. With so many unique items to choose from, shopping in Galaxy’s Edge is an experience and a must-do while you’re there.

Star Tours: The Adventure Continues

From the moment you enter the Star Tours: The Adventure Continues queue, you’re transported into the heart of the Star Wars universe. The lush greenery and shaded areas offer a welcome break from the Florida sun, making it a comfortable spot to soak in the atmosphere before boarding.

The ride itself immerses you in the Star Wars world—you feel like you’re on set, part of the action. During our ride, I loved how interactive it was, especially when I hit buttons and participated in the adventure. You’re not just a passenger; you become part of the crew, which makes the experience even more memorable.

One thing to note is that the ride’s motion simulator can be intense for those prone to motion sickness. Brandon had a little trouble with it, so if you’re sensitive to motion, keep that in mind.

Overall, Star Tours is a fantastic ride that lets you live out your Star Wars fantasies. Each journey offers a different adventure through the galaxy.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Rise of the Resistance is a breathtaking experience that transports you right into the heart of the battle between the Resistance and the First Order.

Our first visit was shortly after the ride opened, and there was a virtual queue. We signed on at seven a.m. and didn’t make the cut. One PM? We got a number: 172. How far did they get that night? 170. That was the last group called that day. Why couldn’t they have had two more? Just two more. Forever a sour number that 1-7-2!

We were naturally disappointed but more than made up for it upon our return in 2023.

The cast members did a fantastic job immersing us in the story from the moment we stepped in, making us feel like we were members of the Resistance. The phenomenal walk-through blended cutting-edge technology with life-sized sets and captivating interactions. From escaping Kylo Ren to facing off against stormtroopers, Rise of the Resistance offers a one-of-a-kind adventure that we, for one, love.

Toy Story Land

Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios is a vibrant, playful area where guests of all ages feel like they’ve been shrunk to the size of a toy. Stepping into Andy’s backyard, you’re surrounded by giant game pieces, colorful blocks, and familiar faces like Woody, Buzz, and Jessie.

The entire land is designed to feel like a larger-than-life toy box, where everything from the fences to the benches makes you feel like you’re part of the Toy Story world.

The attention to detail here is fantastic, and the land’s energy is infectious. It’s hard not to smile as you explore the area. Plus, with attractions for both thrill-seekers and little ones, it’s a spot that every family member can enjoy.

Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky Dog Dash is one of the highlights of Toy Story Land, and the fun begins when you board the ride. The unique ride vehicles, designed to resemble the lovable Slinky Dog from the Toy Story movies, make this coaster a standout. It’s a family-friendly ride perfect for kids ages four and up, though it’s worth considering if your younger child is ready for the excitement.

The ride is smooth, with just the right amount of thrills to keep everyone entertained. Surprise twists and fun scenery add to the excitement, even for repeat riders.

What’s great about Slinky Dog Dash is that it’s fun without being too scary, making it a must-do for many families. Even Breanna, who usually skips most rides, loves this one!

Because it’s such a popular attraction, the lines can get long from the park open to close, so I recommend heading there first thing in the morning or just before the park closes to beat the crowds.

Alien Swirling Saucers

Alien Swirling Saucers is a playful ride inspired by Toy Story’s iconic green aliens and their obsession with The Claw. As you board your ride vehicle, you’ll find yourself spinning in a figure-eight pattern around two circular tracks. The ride is milder than the Mad Tea Party at Magic Kingdom, making it a good option for younger riders. It’s all about the fun, with whirling motions and alien sound effects bringing the magic of the movies to life.

For adults who prefer to sit this one out (it tends to make us queasy), there’s an excellent viewing area where you can relax and watch the ride. The bonus? Our girls love riding together and having the experience all to themselves while we enjoy watching from the sidelines. It’s a perfect mix of fun for the kids and a break for the parents!

Toy Story Mania!

Toy Story Mania! is a fast-paced, interactive 3D ride that puts you in the middle of a series of carnival-inspired midway games. As you board your ride vehicle, you’re given a pair of 3D goggles and a spring-action shooter to aim at various targets throughout the ride. Each game offers a unique challenge, from popping balloons to breaking plates, with your score tallying up at the end. It’s a competitive, family-friendly attraction.

Our family loved the thrill of trying to beat each other’s scores, and the immersive 3D experience made it feel like we were in the middle of the games. The ride vehicles whip and spin you around as you transition between different game scenes, keeping the action fast and fun. If you’ve got a competitive streak or love carnival games, Toy Story Mania! is a must-do in Toy Story Land.

RoundUp Rodeo

Roundup Rodeo BBQ is a new dining experience in Toy Story Land that brings the fun and charm of Toy Story into a lively, family-friendly restaurant.

The setting transports you to a rodeo arena created by Andy out of his toys and game pieces, with oversized characters like Jessie, Bo Peep, and Woody surrounding you as you dine.

The menu offers a hearty selection of barbecue classics, including ribs, brisket, smoked sausage, and plant-based options. It is an excellent spot for those looking to enjoy a flavorful meal with a playful twist.

Though we haven’t made it to Roundup Rodeo yet, it’s on our to-do list for our next visit. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, especially for families who want a themed dining experience that stays true to the whimsical, larger-than-life feel of Toy Story Land.

Sunset Boulevard

unset Boulevard is one of the most iconic areas in Hollywood Studios, offering a perfect blend of old Hollywood glamour and some of the park’s most thrilling attractions. As you stroll down this palm-lined street, you’ll be transported back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, with its art deco architecture, vintage shops, and lively entertainment. The street’s atmosphere sets the stage for some must-see attractions, including the infamous Tower of Terror and the high-speed thrills of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Both rides are major draws, and the area’s overall energy is infectious.

In addition to the rides, Sunset Boulevard offers some great dining and entertainment options. You can catch live performances at the Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage show or the Fantasmic! Nighttime spectacular combines water, lights, and fireworks for an unforgettable show. With its blend of excitement, entertainment, and Hollywood charm, Sunset Boulevard is an essential stop for anyone visiting Hollywood Studios.

Tower of Terror

Of all the rides in Hollywood Studios, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is hands down my absolute favorite. And that’s saying something because I usually hate drop rides! But this one is different—it’s the one drop ride I’m actually “down for” (get it?).

I think what made it easier for me is that we were still in a seat with a platform for our feet, which is different from other drop rides where your feet dangle and your but goes out of the seat. Plus, I liked the thrill of being shot upwards before plummeting down.

The whole ride is packed with eerie, Twilight Zone-inspired surprises that make it more than just a drop—it’s a full experience. Even the wait was memorable. While standing in line, we had a fun family moment when Brandon spotted Veah’s favorite ears on another guest, and she and her dad ended up making a quick trip back to Galaxy’s Edge to snag them- for a whopping $10. Freaking unheard of!

Once inside the iconic, creaky Hollywood Tower Hotel, you’re immediately immersed in the spooky atmosphere, complete with cobwebs and dim lighting.

The ride starts in an elevator, where you’re buckled in and whisked away into the Twilight Zone. From there, mysterious things happen as the elevator moves unpredictably—up, down, and even across the shaft. The thrill of seeing Hollywood Studios from the open window before plunging back down is unforgettable.

Even though Breanna decided to sit this one out (thanks to a kind cast member who escorted her to the lobby), I had an absolute blast. Tower of Terror is one you can’t miss if you’re into adventure rides.

Rockin’ Rollercoaster

Our first visit to Hollywood Studios disappointed us when Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster had a technical issue right before we arrived, and it stayed down for five days. Veah was particularly upset, especially since we’ve heard from many people that it’s their favorite ride at the park.

Thankfully, we got to experience it on our 2023 trip, and it was worth the wait. The ride launches you from 0 to 60 mph in just a few seconds, sending you into an adrenaline-pumping race through Los Angeles, all while jamming out to Aerosmith’s iconic tunes. It’s a thrilling, high-speed rollercoaster packed with twists, turns, and loops that make you feel like a rock star on the ultimate tour.

The only downside? The queue area isn’t very shaded, so we quickly got hot while waiting in line. But once you’re on the ride, the excitement more than makes up for it. The ride is dark and cool, with neon signs lighting your way as you zoom through the streets in a super-stretch limo. If you’re a fan of fast coasters and love some classic rock, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is a can’t-miss experience.

Added Bonus

Starbucks

During our second visit to Hollywood Studios, we stopped at The Trolley Car Café—Hollywood Studios’ very own Starbucks. It was the perfect place to escape the rain and grab a much-needed coffee to recharge.

Located right on Hollywood Boulevard, this quick-service spot offers all the Starbucks favorites you know and love and some unique Disney-themed treats you won’t find at other Starbucks locations.

One of the things I love most about this location is the mix of indoor and outdoor seating, including benches along Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard. This makes it a great place to relax and people-watch. You can even snag a discount if you’re an annual pass holder or DVC member.

While you can’t use Starbucks Rewards Stars here, the unique Disney offerings and cozy atmosphere make it well worth a visit.

Parades

One of the magical things about Hollywood Studios is the parades that pop up unexpectedly, adding extra Disney flair to your day. In 2020, I accidentally stumbled upon one while returning from grabbing my coffee.

I was so excited, but it made me late meeting up with Vaeh! I apologized and explained that I got stuck behind “an old lady and a cowboy.” When I showed her who they were—classic Disney characters dressed in their parade best—she was just as thrilled as I was!

The parades in Hollywood Studios are a colorful spectacle, featuring everything from beloved characters to themed floats and catchy music. Whether it’s a special seasonal event or a daily cavalcade, there’s something exciting about seeing characters like Woody, Jessie, and other Disney favorites roll down the park streets. So, even if you’re running a quick errand for coffee, you never know when you might get caught up in a bit of unexpected Disney magic!

Final Thoughts on Visiting Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is more than just a theme park—it’s an immersive experience that blends classic Disney magic with thrilling adventures, unforgettable entertainment, and a dash of old Hollywood charm.

Whether you’re a Star Wars fan eager to explore Galaxy’s Edge, a movie buff ready to dive into the world of Toy Story, or someone looking for heart-pounding rides like Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, there’s something for everyone. The blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge attractions creates a fun atmosphere for all ages.

I highly recommend visiting because it offers a little of everything—family-friendly fun, intense thrills, great food, and even opportunities to meet your favorite Disney characters.

It’s a park that keeps you engaged from the moment you walk in until the end of the day, and for us, it has become one of our go-to spots for making lasting memories. Trust me, once you experience it, you’ll be eager to return, too!
