I grew up in Illinois. 

When I tell people this, their first thought is, “Oh, Chicago,” and I’m like- uh, no. Southern Illinois. If you want to talk to the nearest big city, St.Louis.

I always thought where I lived was boring, but as I’ve gotten older, I have learned that there is a lot to do about forty-five minutes south of where I grew up. 

I appreciate Southern Illinois a bit more now. So, without further ado, here’s my guide to my former home. 

Best Time to Go to Southern Illinois

Winter (December to February)

Highlights: Winters in Southern Illinois are relatively mild, with average temperatures around 50°F. This season has fewer tourists, making it ideal for exploring without the crowds. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail Passport Program is a great winter perk. The program provides discounts on wine tastings and meals at participating wineries, making it a perfect time for a cozy getaway.

Considerations: While outdoor activities are still possible, be prepared for cooler weather and shorter days. They also get snow, so be sure to check the weather.

Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November)

Highlights: Both the spring and fall seasons offer moderate temperatures, making outdoor activities more enjoyable without the extreme heat or cold. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and budding trees, while fall offers vibrant autumn colors, parades, and harvest festivals.

Considerations: These seasons are less crowded than summer but still provide beautiful scenery and comfortable weather, making them ideal for exploring the natural beauty of Southern Illinois.

Summer (June to August)

Highlights: Summer in Southern Illinois brings warm temperatures, with highs around 90°F. This season is perfect for those who enjoy long days filled with outdoor adventures. 

Summer also means more festivals, fairs, and local events, making it a lively time to visit.

Considerations: The warmer weather can attract larger crowds, but it’s also when businesses have extended hours, ensuring you can make the most of your trip.

The Winning Month: October

Highlights: October is often considered the best month to visit Southern Illinois. The summer heat begins to wane, replaced by cool, crisp air. The fall foliage in Shawnee National Forest and other wooded areas is breathtaking, making it a popular time for hiking and photography.

Considerations: This is a peak season for leaf peepers, so popular spots can be busier.

What to Pack for Southern Illinois

Clothing:

1. Layered Clothing: Temperatures can vary, especially in spring and fall. Pack lightweight layers like moisture-wicking shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and a fleece jacket or hoodie.
2. Hiking Pants/Shorts: Quick-drying, breathable hiking pants or shorts are ideal for outdoor activities.
3. Rain Jacket: A lightweight, waterproof rain jacket or poncho is essential, as sudden showers can occur, especially in spring and summer. Ask my mom… 
4. Comfortable Hiking Socks: Pack moisture-wicking socks, like those made of wool or synthetic materials, to prevent blisters and keep feet dry.

The nearest international airport to the Shawnee National Forest area in Southern Illinois is Lambert- St. Louis International Airport (STL) in St. Louis, Missouri. This airport is the closest major hub and provides numerous domestic and international flights.

Getting from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) to Shawnee National Forest by Car

1. Distance and Driving Time:
   • The distance from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) to the Shawnee National Forest area, particularly to towns like Carbondale or Harrisburg, is approximately 100 to 130 miles.
   • The driving time typically ranges from 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on your destination within the forest area and traffic conditions.
2. Directions:
   • From Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL):
     • Start: Head east on I-70 E from the airport.
     • Merge onto I-64 E: Follow signs for Illinois. You will cross the Mississippi River into Illinois.
     • Continue on I-64 E: Stay on I-64 E for about 60 miles.
     • Take Exit 50: For US-45 S toward Flora/Harrisburg.
     • Follow US-45 S: Depending on your final destination within Shawnee National Forest, you might take different routes, but continuing south on US-45 will lead you toward the forest area. For instance:
       • If heading to Harrisburg (a northern gateway to the forest), continue on US-45 S to IL-13 E.
       • If heading toward Carbondale or Giant City State Park, you can merge onto IL-13 W from Harrisburg.
     • Arrive: Follow signs for specific trailheads, campgrounds, or attractions within Shawnee National Forest.

• Hampton Inn- Carbondale: Hilton Hotels is easily my favorite hotel chain. At this location, guests can enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast each morning, free Wi-Fi, and access to the indoor pool and fitness center. The hotel is known for its friendly service and clean, comfortable rooms. Located close to Southern Illinois University, it’s a popular choice for visitors.
  This location is near Southern Illinois University, Shawnee National Forest, and other local attractions, providing easy access to hiking, wineries, and other outdoor activities.

• New cabin in the woods with private hot tub- Cobden: This newly built cabin in Cobden offers a peaceful retreat nestled in the woods. It features a private hot tub, perfect for stargazing after a long day exploring Shawnee National Forest. The cabin has modern amenities, including a full kitchen, Wi-Fi, and a cozy living area with a fireplace.
  Located near several wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and within a short drive to outdoor attractions like Giant City State Park, this cabin is ideal for a relaxing getaway.
  
• House on the Wine Trail * Hot Tub * Wi-Fi—Alto Pass: This spacious house is located right on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, providing easy access to numerous wineries and vineyards. It features a private hot tub and Wi-Fi. The house offers ample space, a full kitchen, and all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay, whether just two or even up to six people.
  In addition to the wineries, Shawnee National Forest is a short drive away, making it an excellent base for exploring Southern Illinois.

Camping

• Camp in Shawnee National Forest: For those who love being immersed in nature, camping in Shawnee National Forest is a fantastic option. The forest offers a variety of campgrounds, from primitive sites to those with more amenities for our friends with RVs or Camper Vans. Popular areas for camping include the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, Pounds Hollow Recreation Area, and Lake Glendale Recreation Area.

Camping within the forest provides direct access to hiking, fishing, kayaking, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities.

Best Places to Eat in Southern Illinois

I will be all over the place; you’ve been warned. I will name the town so you can find out if it’s near the area where you are staying.

Also, as time progresses, I plan to spend more time in my old stomping ground, so be sure to return for updates!

Coffee

• Crown Brew Coffee, Marion: I first visited Crown Brew Coffee in 2022, and I loved it almost instantly because of its warm, inviting atmosphere. With large windows perfect for people-watching or getting some work done, it’s a favorite spot for locals and travelers alike.
  I opted to get the Charlie Brown Latte, which has brown sugar and a sprinkle of thick sea salt.
  
• 6:10 Coffee, Salem: Growing up in this small town, I was shocked to learn that 6:10 Coffee was built in a former Jiffy Lube. This café offers a variety of unique flavors that cater to a wide range of tastes.
  On a recent visit, I enjoyed a hot cookie butter latte (half-sweet, of course), which was perfectly smooth and toasty—just right for kicking off a morning drive to Chicago. Although it was a bit too early in the morning for me, another recommendation when going to 6:10 Coffee is their specialty Ski drinks. These drinks offer a refreshing twist to experience a local flavor.
  
  Instead, I went to the local IGA and bought two twelve packs, so we had some when we returned to Texas. Yes, y’all, Ski is that important.

Main Dishes

• Auten’s Pizza, McLeansboro: Auten’s Pizza is a hidden gem in McLeansboro that you might overlook if you didn’t know any better. Despite its unassuming exterior, this place is a local favorite, known for serving the best pizza in the area. It’s so well-loved that my brother and sister-in-law chose to have it at their rehearsal dinner! It’s a local secret, and you’re welcome.
  
• Underground Public House, Carbondale: The Underground Public House in Carbondale is a great spot for those looking to enjoy a hearty meal in a relaxed, pub-like setting. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and a menu filled with comfort food favorites, this place is perfect for grabbing a bite with friends or family after exploring the area.
  The diverse menu offers something for everyone, from burgers and sandwiches to salads and vegetarian options.
• Scratch Brewing Company, Ava: While Southern Illinois is known for its wineries, Scratch Beer offers a unique experience for beer enthusiasts. This brewery stands out by sourcing local ingredients to craft its beers, providing an authentic taste. The brewers at Scratch Beer take pride in using foraged ingredients and locally grown produce.
  
  In addition to its innovative beer offerings, Scratch Beer serves wood-fired pizza, which is described as having the perfect crust, chewing and crunchy. Its unique beers and delicious, freshly made pizzas make this spot a must-visit for those looking to explore Southern Illinois’ culinary and craft beverage scene.

Dessert

• Flamm’s Orchard’s Peach Ice Cream, Cobden: Dessert lovers must stop at Flamm’s Orchard in Cobden for their infamous Peach Ice Cream.
  Made with fresh, locally grown peaches, this ice cream is the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day. The creamy texture and rich peach flavor make it a standout dessert, showcasing the best of Southern Illinois’ local produce.
  
• Chicos, Salem: Yes, you can get main dish food from them, too, but I’ll go for the apple nachos. These tortilla strips have been dusted with cinnamon and topped with their homemade apple sauce. Worth. Every. Penny. 

Things To Do in Southern Illinois

Dungeons and Dragons Park

Location: Carbondale, Illinois

Officially known as Jeremy “Boo” Rochman Memorial Park, this unique park is often referred to as Dungeons and Dragons Park due to its whimsical, fantasy-themed sculptures and play areas inspired by the game.

The park features a life-sized castle, dragon sculptures, and intricate playground equipment that evoke a medieval fantasy world, making it a fun destination for families and fans of fantasy. It was built in memory of Jeremy Rochman, a young man who passed away in 1990 due to a car accident. His love of Dungeons and Dragons shows throughout the park, with some statues being a larger model of characters he created.

Giant City State Park

Location: Makanda, Illinois

Giant City State Park is one of Southern Illinois’s most popular outdoor destinations, known for its massive sandstone bluffs, dense woodlands, and diverse wildlife.

The park offers numerous hiking trails, including the famous Giant City Nature Trail, which leads visitors through narrow passageways and alongside impressive rock formations. The park also features camping sites, fishing, and rock climbing.

If you want to stay in the area and have a meal, the Giant City Lodge within the park serves delicious fried chicken and other Southern specialties. It is a great spot to refuel after a day of adventure.

Bald Knob Cross of Peace

Location: Alto Pass, Illinois

Bald Knob Cross of Peace is one of the most iconic landmarks in Southern Illinois, standing tall atop Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass. This massive cross, which rises over 111 feet, symbolizes unity, hope, and peace. The cross is visible for miles and is particularly striking when illuminated at night.

The site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Shawnee National Forest. Visitors can explore the peaceful grounds, which include a small chapel and a visitor center that provides information about the history and significance of the cross.

Bald Knob Cross of Peace is also a site for various community events, including sunrise services on Easter morning, which attract large crowds who come to witness the sun rise over the horizon while standing at the foot of this monumental structure.

Garden of the Gods

Location: Shawnee National Forest, near Herod, Illinois

Garden of the Gods is one of the most iconic locations in Southern Illinois and a must-visit for nature lovers and hikers. This area is renowned for its stunning sandstone rock formations created by natural erosion.

The Observation Trail is a short, easy hike that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding forest and unique rock formations like the famous Camel Rock. It’s a perfect spot for photography, bird watching, and enjoying the serene beauty of nature.

Bork Falls

Location: Within Ferne Clyffe State Park, Goreville, Illinois

Bork Falls is one of the hidden gems within Ferne Clyffe State Park, offering a secluded and serene spot for visitors to enjoy. This seasonal waterfall is off the beaten path, requiring a bit of a hike, but the journey is well worth it for those who love exploring lesser-known natural wonders. The falls cascade into a tranquil pool, creating a peaceful setting perfect for cooling off on a hot day or enjoying a quiet moment surrounded by nature.

Be sure to visit after a good rain for the best chance to see the waterfall in full flow, as its appearance can vary significantly with the season and weather.

Shawnee Hills Wine Trail

Location: Southern Illinois, stretching from Murphysboro to Alto Pass

The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail is a scenic route that winds through the rolling hills of Southern Illinois, featuring over a dozen wineries. While at the wineries, visitors can enjoy wine tastings, tours, and picturesque views of vineyards.

Many wineries offer outdoor seating, live music, and events. The trail is known for catering to all palates with its diverse wine offerings, from sweet fruit to robust reds.

Head to Clark Kent’s Metropolis

Location: Metropolis, Illinois

Metropolis, Illinois, proudly celebrates its claim as the “Home of Superman.”

This small town has embraced its superhero theme, featuring a giant Superman statue in the town square, the Superman Museum, and various superhero-themed shops and attractions.
